So this week we\u2019ve got your back and we\u2019re throwing the most used automotive terms at you to help you learn what they mean and have the confidence to take on your car search like never before! <\/span><\/p>\n<p>If you have any questions, feel free to call or stop in! Take a few minutes to browse our inventory and don\u2019t forget to schedule a test drive for whenever is most convenient for you!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Terms (Alphabetically, you\u2019re welcome):<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Air Pressure:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The amount of air inside the tire pressing outward on each square inch of the tire. Air pressure is expressed in kPa (kilopascal) or psi (pounds per square inch).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Accessory Weight:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The combined weight of optional accessories. Some examples of optional accessories are an automatic transmission, power windows, power seats, and air conditioning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Aspect Ratio:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The relationship of a tire&#8217;s height to its width. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Belt:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A rubber-coated layer of cords between the plies and the tread. Cords may be made from steel or other reinforcing materials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Bead:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The tire bead contains steel wires wrapped by steel cords that hold the tire onto the rim.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Bias Ply Tire:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A pneumatic tire in which the plies are laid at alternate angles less than 90 degrees to the centerline of the tread.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Cold Tire Pressure:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The amount of air pressure in a tire, measured in kPa (kilopascal) or psi pounds per square inch) before a tire has built up heat from driving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Curb Weight:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The weight of a motor vehicle with standard and optional equipment including the maximum capacity of fuel, oil, and coolant, but without passengers and cargo. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>DOT Markings:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A code molded into the sidewall of a tire signifying that the tire is in compliance with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. The DOT code includes the Tire Identification Number (TIN), an alphanumeric designator which can also identify the tire manufacturer, production plant, brand, and date of production. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>GVWR:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Gross Vehicle Weight Rating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>GAWR FRT:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Gross Axle Weight Rating for the front axle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>GAWR RR:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Gross Axle Weight Rating for the rear axle. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Intended Outboard Sidewall:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The side of an asymmetrical tire that must always face outward when mounted on a vehicle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Kilopascal (kPa):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The metric unit for air pressure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Light Truck (LT-Metric) Tire:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A tire used on light duty trucks and some multipurpose passenger vehicles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Load Index:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> An assigned number ranging from 1 to 279 that corresponds to the load carrying capacity of a tire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Maximum Inflation Pressure: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The maximum air pressure to which a cold tire can be inflated. The maximum air pressure is molded onto the sidewall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Maximum Load Rating:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The load rating for a tire at the maximum permissible inflation pressure for that tire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Maximum Loaded Vehicle Weight:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The sum of curb weight, accessory weight, vehicle capacity weight, and production options weight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Normal Occupant Weight:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The number of occupants a vehicle is designed to seat multiplied by 68 kg (150 lb).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Occupant Distribution:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Designated seating positions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Outward Facing Sidewall:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The side of an asymmetrical tire that has a particular side that faces outward when mounted on a vehicle. The side of the tire that contains a whitewall, bears white lettering, or bears manufacturer, brand, and\/or model name molding that is higher or deeper than the same moldings on the other sidewall of the tire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Passenger (P-Metric) Tire:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A tire used on passenger cars and some light duty trucks and multipurpose vehicles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Recommended Inflation Pressure: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vehicle manufacturer&#8217;s recommended tire inflation pressure as shown on the tire placard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Radial Ply Tire:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A pneumatic tire in which the ply cords that extend to the beads are laid at 90 degrees to the centerline of the tread.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Rim:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A metal support for a tire and upon which the tire beads are seated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Sidewall:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The portion of a tire between the tread and the bead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Speed Rating:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> An alphanumeric code assigned to a tire indicating the maximum speed at which a tire can operate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Traction:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The friction between the tire and the road surface. The amount of grip provided.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Tread:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The portion of a tire that comes into contact with the road.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Treadwear Indicators:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Narrow bands, sometimes called wear bars, that show across the tread of a tire when only 1.6 mm (1\/16 in) of tread remains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>UTQGS (Uniform Tire Quality Grading Standards):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A tire information system that provides consumers with ratings for a tire&#8217;s traction, temperature, and treadwear. Ratings are determined by tire manufacturers using government testing procedures.
