Have you ever had the experience of driving along, minding your own business, and then encountering a driver with SUCH bad manners (or bad driving habits) that it made you see red? It’s happened to all of us, but unfortunately that anger is super dangerous. Normally you’d say “hey, blog, you know that I am fueled by rage in my everyday life!” I will tell you that this is probably unhealthy, but it’s especially bad when you’re behind the wheel. Road rage is a serious problem that causes thousands of accidents per year. This is why we have put together this list of tips for avoiding road rage and making sure that you’re on the right track, no matter how many terrible drivers you encounter on the road. First, always plan for a delay on your trip. Even if you’re traveling a route that you’re super familiar with, the traffic on that route changes every second. You might have a totally clear drive one morning and then a clogged traffic jam the next morning. So, to avoid the anxiety and distress that often come from tardiness, plan for delays and leave early! When you are on the road, stay alert for people who have a tendency to tailgate. If you have someone who starts trying to drive directly up your tailpipe, move over and let them pass you at the first opportunity you have to do so safely. Wave them on if they need encouragement and don’t try to bait them by brake-checking or slowing down. Lay off the horn while you’re at it. Using your horn not only annoys other drivers when it’s done unnecessarily, it can make you upset as well! Seriously! So, try to only use that horn in case of emergency - if you need to tell someone to get off their phone when the light turns green or if someone’s driving dangerously, for example. If you get a little more upset than you might be comfortable with on your commute, try turning on some soothing music or soft talk radio to distract you a little and give your brain some calming vibes. It works! Finally, try to avoid other drivers who are road raging. Let them pass, don’t bait them, move around them - whatever works to get you out of their way. When we’re out and about and getting gas, I think it’s safe to say that a LOT of us have that little habit of squeezing the pump just a little more after it shuts off so that we can get an even dollar amount on that total price. It’s okay to admit, I do it all the time. It’s not a good habit, though - and it’s actually pretty bad for your vehicle to do this. You drive a great new Nissan, you should be taking care of it! Take a look at these reasons why it’s actually really bad for your vehicle to top off the tank, and then join the club of recovering pump-squeezers. We can get through this! First of all, when you top off the tank, what you’re doing is literally adding more gas than can actually fit in the tank to begin with. That’s why the pump handle releases - because the sensor in the pump can tell when the tank is totally full, and so when you keep squeezing… well. You can figure it out. That excess gas doesn’t magically fit into the tank, though. If the tank is too full then the gas can go into your vehicle’s evaporative emissions system - specifically the carbon filter, which is designed only to hold fuel vapors, not actual fuel. The gas can then spill on the ground or cause issues with engine operation - the result of which is poor fuel economy, poor emissions, and decreased engine performance overall. The next thing is that you’re just wasting money. A lot of pumps can sense when there’s too much gas in the tank already (as I mentioned above) and after that point is reached, it’ll start sending gas back into the station’s tank if you keep trying to add more to your own tank. So the dollars and cents will continue to rise but you’re getting none of the gas that you’re paying for. Waste! Of! Money! Well, winter’s long gone by now and so we’re out of the danger zone of your battery dying on you - batteries hate the cold! However, it’s still very important to know how to change your vehicle’s battery. Just because summer is so close doesn’t mean that your battery is just going to keep on truckin’, especially if it’s at the end of its natural life. Something that you should know about your car’s battery is that the power that’s housed inside of it is an absolutely finite resource. One day, your battery will die. Of course, if you take good care of it and drive carefully, that day should be several years after you buy the battery, but eventually, it will perish and you’ll be powerless (get it) to stop it. That’s why you should know now how to change your battery so that in the event that you need to do so, you can. First of all, the location of your battery is going to be in your owner’s manual. If you drive anything other than a regular old gasoline vehicle (i.e. a hybrid) you should 100% be checking your owner’s manual for instructions on how to change the battery. When you’ve located the battery, make sure you know which post is the positive one and which is the negative, and which color the cables are that are attached to them. The positive post will probably have a red plastic cover, a red cable, and a plus sign (+) stamped on the battery next to the positive post. If the cables are not color coded, put some tape on them and label the cables. With a wrench, loosen the nut or bolt that keeps the negative terminal and cable attached to the battery. Remove them from the battery, and then move on to the positive terminal. ALWAYS DO NEGATIVE FIRST! Check your battery to see if it is being held down by clamps or tie-downs or similar and remove them if they are there. Set all of your loose parts aside where they will not be misplaced while you switch out the battery. Now, lift out the battery without jostling it or tipping it. It is heavy, so be careful! Next, it’s time to install the new battery! Place it in the same spot the old battery was in and make sure it is oriented the same exact way the old one was. Take the plastic caps off of the battery posts, and if there are anti-corrosion washers included then slide those on. A good idea is to smear a thin layer of Vaseline onto the posts before attaching the terminals to the battery to prevent corrosion and make sure your vehicle is always getting as much power as it needs. Attach the terminals back on, positive first, and fasten it back down with the clamps/tie-downs that you removed before. Give the battery a little wiggle and make sure it doesn’t move. If it does, tighten the clamps holding it down. And you’re done! Great job! Make sure you recycle your old battery - a quick Google search will let you know the best place to do that. How much of your spring cleaning have you gotten done so far? I know that I am definitely not as far along as I want to be, especially given that I’ll start cleaning and then get bored of it or just start watching Netflix about ten minutes in and then give up for the rest of the day. Anyway, if you have a garage, it’s important that you clean it out, especially in preparation for the summer. If it was messy all winter, then you, of course, had to brave the snow, but who wants to brave the heat and then wait for the car to cool down, when you could have had it in the garage in the first place? Are you like me and, even though you’re kind of young, you have the eyes of an 85-year-old person whose favorite lifelong hobby has been staring directly into the sun? It’s not fun. I should have healthy, youthful eyeballs but instead, I get to wear Coke-bottle glasses and can’t really see at night. This makes it difficult for me to drive after dark, but I’ve figured out some ways I can boost my vision and stay safe on the road, even when I’m driving past sunset. If you suffer similarly, you might benefit from these tips! Check them out! The first one is to not wear any kind of tinted glasses at night. People market things like “glare reducing” glasses that have a slight tint, and if you own them you should just throw them away or use them when you’re at work and looking at a computer all day. The tint in glasses is pigment, which blocks light from reaching your eyes. Sight is literally light hitting your retinas, and if you have problems with your sight in the darkness, then you need all the light you can get. Even so, the light from the headlights of oncoming vehicles can be too much for anyone and leave you with spots in your vision. If you are about to pass an oncoming vehicle, keep your eyes trained on the white line at the side of the road. You’ll be able to see the vehicle in your periphery and stay in your lane, but you won’t get a big spot in the middle of your line of vision! Finally, if you really feel that it would not be safe for you to drive at night, don’t do it. Get a ride, schedule around it, or just stay home. You can have a lot of fun with a good book, I promise. And a book won’t put you at risk of getting into a car accident (unless, of course, you’re reading at the wheel… which I don’t think I have to tell you not to do). Safety is always first! With spring here, we’re in for increased rainfall and therefore wet roads. This means that you’re at a much higher risk of hydroplaning on the road - a dangerous thing that can lead to a crash. This week’s blog, we’ll be talking about what you should do when you’re driving on a wet road, and what to do if you start to hydroplane. Stay safe! The first thing to remember is not to panic. Don’t slam on the brakes or the gas. Hydroplaning is when your front tires lose traction. Braking slows down your front tires, but locks the rear ones and makes you spin out. And because hydroplaning can spin your vehicle a little, accelerating can mean trouble because you really don’t have control of which direction your vehicle is going to go. What you should do is look for an open spot (ideally right in front of you, if you’re on the road) and try to steer in that direction. Don’t oversteer! Just gently guide your vehicle in that direction without pushing on the brake or the gas. To avoid hydroplaning, don’t use your cruise control in heavy rain. The water on the road and a loss of traction can trick your vehicle into thinking that it needs more power, and the cruise control will accelerate suddenly and can get you in trouble. You can also avoid hydroplaning with some preventive measures! Make sure your tire tread is in good shape by doing the penny test (stick a penny into your tires’ tread with the top of Lincoln’s head facing the center of your tire - if you can see the top of his head, it’s time for new tires), and by driving carefully and slower than normal in the rain. A good rule of thumb is to go at 1/3 the speed you’d normally go. Take care and good luck - rain is dangerous in its own way and we want to make sure you’re safe and sound in your Nissan! When you’re out on the road, the things you’re paying attention to probably include what’s on the radio, the scenery, your passengers, the other vehicles on the road… and probably not your fuel level. Sure, you fill up when you have to, but it’s easy to let your tank get down to the bare bottom before you stop at the gas station. Well, it’s not exactly the best idea to do this, and certainly not to make a habit of it. There are many reasons why driving on empty is bad, but here are three that might give you a little wake-up call and help you observe the quarter tank rule (i.e. never let your tank get below a quarter full) a little better. The first reason is because your fuel gauge is not always accurate. Sure, there are some vehicles out there that will say cheerful things like “you have 5 miles until empty,” but even that’s not completely true. You never know how much is really left once you hit that E until your vehicle physically runs out of gas. It could be 5 miles, it could be 50, but do you really want to find out? There are plenty of videos on YouTube of other people testing it out. Just watch them, don’t try it yourself. Next, your fuel pump uses the gas it pulls in as a coolant. When there’s not enough gas, it starts sucking in air. The air creates more friction and definitely isn’t as cool as the liquid fuel, and your pump burns out very quickly, especially if this practice is repeated often. The repair or replacement is expensive. Much more expensive than a tank of gas. Believe us, because we do that kind of work and we know that a tank of gas is much less expensive. The final thing is that there’s sediment at the bottom of every fuel tank. When your fuel level gets lower and lower, that sediment gets closer and closer to getting sucked up with the fuel and pushed through your fuel lines and fuel injectors, clogging them up and destroying your fuel system from the inside out. If you let this happen often enough, your vehicle will need a full flush. That’s pretty dang expensive. Try An Electric Leaf And Leave Gas Behind

Spring is here and that means your vehicle is going to have a much easier time of handling the roads, just because of the warmer temperatures and lack of snow and ice on the ground. You’ll be able to pop that sunroof, roll down the windows, and take in the nice weather! Of course, you also have to make sure that your vehicle has survived the winter well. There are some essentials for spring car maintenance that a lot of folks don’t know about, but we’ve put them into this week’s blog so that you can get a leg up and make sure your Nissan lasts for many years to come. Check it out! Start with your tires, even if you drive on all-season tires. If you do use all-seasons, this is the time to rotate them. By rotating tires seasonally, you extend the life of all four tires. Windshield wiper blades also get the short end of the winter weather stick. Colder temperatures are hard on rubber compounds, and slush from the road is not very helpful when it comes to maintaining the blades. This slush often carries with it corrosive salt used to melt road ice, which can really hurt your blades. Early spring is a good time to you’re running low after winter. Next, clean your vehicle’s undercarriage. There’s no magic solution to getting rid of the corrosive salt build-up but the best tool is a high-pressure sprayer. Pay special attention to the area around the front and rear bumpers. Once you’ve thoroughly sprayed the underbody, check for signs of rust and take the necessary steps to stop any small rust spots from eating away at your vehicle. We’ve all seen the “snow boogers” that form around bumpers and wheel wells. That’s the most likely place for road salt to begin the erosion process. While you’re at it, you might as well wash the whole car. Winter is not really the time to spend afternoons hosing off your vehicle and chances are it’s been a while since the last time you’ve washed your car. Examine your brakes. Like wipers, brakes take on a bigger role during wintertime and should be checked to ensure that they’re still in good shape. Listen for brake noises such as grinding, chatter, or squeals. Even if your brakes aren’t making any noises, it’s still a good idea for you or your mechanic to determine the amount of wear on the pads or drums. We often become accustomed to the feel of worn brakes, without realizing that we’ve become used to decreased stopping power. Check all automotive fluids and top them off if you need to. Driving in the winter requires your engine to work harder and condensation can cause moisture buildup in the engine that creates wear. If your car is due for scheduled maintenance, have the oil changes and be sure to use the proper formulation and viscosity recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. Go over the interior of your vehicle. This includes taking out and washing floor liners. Vacuum and clean the carpets, and make sure they are dry before you put the liners back in. A nice, clean interior is one of the best parts of driving after all!
