In 2013, filmmaker Luke Aker made a video featuring his 1996 Nissan Maxima that went along with a craigslist advertisement that he posted for the model. The video  went viral almost instantly, for its comedic approach at incorporating the look and feel of a luxury commercial with this older models in need of some serious TLC. As a result, the video’s popularity grew so quickly that it gained the attention of Nissan Motor Co., who then reached out to Aker to purchase the vehicle. Afterwards, Nissan chose to restore the model and display it at the North American headquarters in Tennessee following opinions collected from fans on social media.
“This Craigslist ad was hilarious and incredibly well done, so we jumped at the opportunity to pick it up and have some fun with it,” said Erich Marx, Nissan Director of Interactive and Social Media Marketing. “Thanks to an overwhelming response from the online community, we decided to do a full restoration to the vehicle, ultimately resulting in this playful video.”
When the 1996 Nissan Maxima was fully restored, Nissan brought Aker back on board in order to have him create a second video outlining the unique journey of this model. In the videos above and below you can view the full story and see Aker’s videos “Luxury” and “Luxury Restored”.
