After a long summer of travel, your Nissan is probably in need of a tune-up. Lucky for your the professionals here at Younger Nissan of Frederick are ready to take on your Nissan service needs. Simply schedule an appointment online or give us a call today! However, if youâre into SIY service, look no further, because this weekâs blog is all about fall service you can complete yourself! Take a peek below and kickstart your fall service today!
Battery Power:
- Making sure your battery is fresh is important. The experts say you should change your battery every 3 years, though you could get away with 5 depending on how much you drive…If youâre thinking to yourself âI canât remember the last time I changed my battery,â it might be time to do so.
- Make sure the cables are not loose. With the engine off, see if the cables can slip free from the nodes. Donât yank, but be firm.
- Check for corrosion, a white powder that forms around the nodes or clamps of your battery. You can clean this off using baking soda, water, and a toothbrush.
Fill your Fluids:
- It might cost you a little bit more but invest in a âwinter blendâ type of windshield wiper fluid. These tend to have more alcohol in them and less water so the chance of freezing is less.
- If your windshield washer fluid tank hasn’t been flushed in a few years then it could use it! Be sure not to mix colors; most antifreeze is green, blue, or yellow, but be sure not to mix colors.
- Checking your vehicle’s oil is important. If you have not had an oil change in a long time, it might be time for one.
Additional Preventative Measures:
- Buy an emergency kit with cables, a first aid kit, flares, a battery-powered air compressor, and other things that can prevent a minor inconvenience from becoming a major problem.
- Check the clarity of all your lights.
- Keeping the gas tank at half-filled can help prevent a fuel line freeze; so can that fuel-line antifreeze mentioned earlier.
- Tire pressure is important in the snow, be sure that your vehicleâs tires are to the correct PSI.

Fall is just around the corner, which means hurricane season is almost here. Even though we might not be affected too badly here in Hagerstown, heavy rain is no stranger to us. If youâve ever been stuck in the middle of a heavy rainstorm while driving, then you know it can be scary and stressful. Thatâs why this week we want to help prepare you with some tips and tricks in case you find yourself stuck in this position on the road. Another way to have better peace of mind is to service your vehicle regularly, especially after a long summer of travel. So go ahead, take a peek below and then head over to our site to schedule a service appointment today!
Driving in heavy rain:
- Turn your headlights on â the Highway Code says you must use them when visibility is seriously reduced
- Use fog lights if you like, but switch them off when visibility improves.
- Leave twice as much space between you and the car in front â it takes longer to stop in the wet.
- If your steering feels light due to hydroplaning, ease off the accelerator and slow down gradually.
- If you break down don’t prop the bonnet open while you wait. Rain-soaked electrics can make it harder to start the engine.
Driving during floods and standing water
- Try to avoid standing water if you can.
- Don’t drive into flood water thatâs moving or more than 4 inches deep. Let approaching cars pass first if you are unsure of the depth
- Drive slowly and steadily so you donât make a bow wave.
- Test your brakes as soon as you can afterward. Water can have a damaging effect on brakes, make sure they are working properly before you continue to drive
- Fast-moving water is very powerful: if strong enough your car could be swept away. Find an alternate route if the water is moving too fast to pass-through
Watch out for:
- Look out for slip and trip hazards like curbs under the water.
- Manhole covers can get lifted and moved.
- Water levels can change quickly

From the little things to the small stuff, the service team at Younger Nissan of Frederick can assist you with all of your vehicle needs. This week we are focusing on treating your vehicle to fall service before the season officially changes! Take a look at our guide below, schedule your service appointment online today, and be sure to grab a service offer before stopping in to see us! We look forward to working with you and your Nissan this season – see you soon!
Car Battery
- With the changes of seasons coming quickly, itâs a great time to stop in to see our team for diagnostic testing to ensure that your battery is healthy and ready to take on the winter temperatures. Plus, ask to have your cables and terminals checked for corrosion and properly tightened. Winter is known for killing batteries, stop in, and letâs have your battery properly maintenanced before the change of seasons!
Headlights
- As our cars age, our headlights tend to become cloudy or even hazy, especially on vehicles that are continuously parked outside in the elements. While the days get shorter, we will be using our headlights much more these days which means itâs very important to ensure that your headlights are the brightest they could possibly be. Whether itâs headlight conditioning, replacement of the bulbs, or replacing your headlights altogether, our team can assist you with all of your needs.
Tires
- Responsible driving all starts at the tires. Monthly tread inspections can help you stay on top of when itâs time to replace your tires. If you have noticed that your tires are less than â -inch of tread, then itâs time to upgrade. While all-season tires might be a cheaper option upfront, choosing a set for both summer and winter, offers a more well-rounded performance. Stop in to see our team and let us help you choose the right tires for your vehicle!
Wipers
- Did you know that itâs a great option to replace your wipers every six months? Typically, your wipers should be replaced twice a year to ensure top performance. Before the fall season, itâs a great option to upgrade those wipers and choose a pair that are specifically designed for winter weather as we are quickly heading that way. Also, if youâre looking to extend the lifespan of your wipers, we encourage you to clean them with a paper towel and glass cleaner each time you stop to get gas.

Have you ever been driving down the road and all of a sudden start smelling something a little funky? If not, youâre lucky! But if you have, you know that some things that smell a little funky can mean bad things for your vehicle. This week, we are bringing you five smells that you should NEVER ignore and what they could mean. So, without further ado, letâs get started on those smells! And if you need a Nissan service appointment, schedule yours now at Younger Nissan of Frederick!
You Smell: Rotten eggs
What It Is: This could mean that your catalytic converter is having issues. And hydrogen sulfide could be making its way into your exhaust. This could simply be a fuel injection issue, or your cat is failing. Unfortunately, this could end up being a pretty expensive repair and lastly, if you smell the rotten eggs when your vehicle is turned off, that funky smell could just be some old food stuck under your seat or an old gym bag! Â
You Smell: Hot oil
What It Is: The easiest smell of all to diagnose is hot oil. This happens when oil leaks onto your exhaust manifold which is hot due to your engine running. This smell is not pleasant so youâll probably notice it right away! Take a look around your engine and vehicle to look for leaks. Also, keep an eye out for any smoke. If you can find the leak, try to stem it, then bring your car to the shop as soon as possible.
You Smell: Sulfur
What It Is: When you smell sulfur in your car, itâs safe to assume that it is gear lubricant leaking from either the manual transmission, transfer case, or differential housing. Sulfur compounds in the oil are used as extreme pressure lubricants for gears and after being in use for a while, these substances can get smelly and gross. Check for those oily puddles under your vehicle and if you notice any, bring your ride in for a check-up!Â
You Smell: Maple syrup
What It Is: While this one might sound delicious, itâs most definitely toxic! The coolant has ethylene glycol in it, which makes this smell a bit concerning. If youâre smell maple syrup, that means thereâs a leak somewhere and youâll want to stop in for our technicians to take a look! This can be a simple fix but itâs best to have a certified technician treat this.Â
You Smell: A gas station
What It Is: If youâre not sitting next to a gas station, this is an issue. If your car is on the older side (i.e. before 1980) then you could be smelling gas when you turn your vehicle off and have no issue. But, if your vehicle is newer, the smell of gasoline could mean a leak from your fuel injection line or fuel tank vent hose. Either way, itâs best to play this safe and stop in to see our team for a service check-up.
