QUICK! Get the Rogaine, My Tires Are Bald!
So it has come to my attention that tires can go bald. Now, this was shocking information to me as I wasnāt even really aware that they had hair. Like… that seems counterproductive… to the rolling thing. BUT Iām not a tire professional. Ok, now that Iāve got your attention, no, your tires do not grow hair, BUT they can go bald. And no, you canāt just get Rogaine for them to fix the problem. What ābaldā means is basically the tread on your tires wears down and your tires are less effective at gripping the ground which would result in you sliding around the road.
This could be a problem, particularly when itās rainy out and your car needs the extra grip to get around safely. Worn down tires can also lead to tire blow outs or air leaks depending on how worn down the tire is. All in all, a bald tire is an unsafe tire, besides, your tire will be SO self-conscious. We canāt have that, so itās best to keep track of your tiresā wear so that you can avoid a dangerous situation.
How can you tell that your tire is worn down too far and needs to be replaced? Well, Iām glad that you asked because that is the easy part! All you need is a penny. Yes, you read that correctly. This is probably the cheapest test you will ever put your car through. All you have to do is put the penny into one of the indents, or tread, of your tire with Lincolnās head down and facing you. If the tread covers to his hairline, youāll need to change your tires soon. If you can see the top of Lincolnās head, itās time to change those tires. Now wasnāt that a super simple test?
If you find that your car is in need of new tires, getting your tires replaced with Younger Nissan of Frederick is just a simple as checking to see if you need to replace your tires. We keep the process simple and quick. Our service is exceptional at what they do, so you and your vehicle will be in good hands. So stop by today to get your car serviced by the professionals that you can trust. Younger Nissan of Frederick is here to keep service simple.
Expecting the Unexpected: Emergency Supplies
Ok, friends. I know that none of us expects that weāll be in an emergency situation, but letās be honest, it is terrifying to be in a situation and be totally unprepared to handle it. GOOD NEWS: you can easily prepare for most emergency situations youāll encounter while on the road. In an effort to keep yourself and those who travel with you safe, below you will find a few lists of things you may need to be fully prepared to handle in an emergency situation.
-
First Aid kit. Some of the items to include are:

Gauze pads

Choose a small one that is easy to store.
-
-

Some optional items for your roadside kit include:

Collapsible shuttle

Ice scraper
-
Cat litter for slick roads
-
Small battery-powered fan
-
Blankets and/or warm clothing
Other Pro Tips of things you can keep in your car to be prepared for an emergency:
-
Cell phone car charger: Keeping your phone charged up when you’re on the road can help you reach out for assistance in an emergency. In addition to a standard car charger, also consider a solar charger.
-
Cash for gas: If the power goes out due to inclement weather, it’s nearly impossible to get gas with just your credit card. Cash always works, so keep some safely tucked away in your car.
-
Clean, empty, refillable gas jug: This won’t fit in your every-day emergency kit, Just remember it’s never safe to keep a full jug in your vehicle, as gas is highly flammable and unstable.
-
Check all car fluids before a long drive: including oil, antifreeze, and transmission fluid. These should be clean and full to make sure your vehicle is running in tip-top shape.
-
Deck of cards, book, or other entertainment: Literally any kind of entertainment that doesnāt require technology. I know that as someone whoās every move uses her cellphone, itās a hard pill to swallow that I may not have the ability to charge it should an emergency arise. So have options.
It doesnāt hurt to be prepared for the worst. It provides with peace of mind that you can handle any situation you end up in. I recommend plastic bins in the trunk so that you know exactly where everything is and can easily access the. So get your bags together and keep that trunk organized!
Welcome to The Dark Side
There are many benefits of living off the beaten path. Itās quiet and if you are like me and arenāt really a āpeople personā (I tend to be more of a cat person, to be honest) it is simply lovely to not have to come in contact with another human being unless you are truly trying to. The downside, however, is that in my glorious and quiet sanctuary the streets are not well lit. It is generally pretty dark out there, but the dark hadnāt been a problem really because my Nissan Altima is pretty excellent when it comes to headlights. I can always see where Iām going, so itās not something I thought about. Until I had to.
I was on my way home from work, which usually takes about 45 minutes, itās kind of a hike, but I love my job so itās worth it. This night, in particular, I was exhausted, and there was an accident on the highway so it took about an hour and a half to even get off the highway. I finally hit the back roads and thought that I was home free! A few windy roads away from a quart of ice cream and tacos!

Out of nowhere, everything went dark. I couldnāt see a single thing even a foot in front of my car. Guys, Iām not nocturnal. As cool as that would be, not to mention how EXTREMELY helpful it would be, I am very much someone who requires light to see. LAME. It quickly became apparent that my headlights went out. So to recap, Iām in the middle of nowhere in the dark. I had to call my sister to come and get me and go get my car in the morning.
Now, my car was relatively new at the time, Iād only had it for about a year, so I was so confused as to why the lights went out. I brought my vehicle to Younger Nissan of Frederick and they were so helpful. They checked my car over thoroughly to make sure everything was ok. It appeared that a mouse had chewed through several wires in my car, including both to the headlights causing them to go out. Fortunately, they were able to fix everything up and I have been a bit more vigilant about the mice in my garage, let me tell you. I even let the cats out there from time to time to act as guards. No more mousy snack time for my car.
If you find yourself without headlights always pull off to the side of the road and call for assistance. Risking the lives of other people on the road in cars or otherwise is simply not worth it. To get your headlights checked or repaired you can stop by Younger Nissan of Frederick and weāll be happy to get your car back in shape.
Itās an Altima, Not A Laundry Basket
Itās that time of year again. That time when I look in the back of my once pristine 2017 Nissan Altima from Younger Nissan and realize that all of those clothes I thought I lost have in fact just been in my back seat. Summer is now in full swing, so I canāt stress enough how the stank has really just been marinating in here creating a foul smell I canāt quite identify, but I know it is not great. All I know is that itās time for me to clean out this mess.
How did all of these clothes get in here, you may be wondering. Well, It all started last fall (I know, Iām not proud of how long my car has existed in this deplorable state). It started with one jacket, just in case it got cold. Fall is a tricky season. Sometimes itās perfect for a light sweater, sometimes it gets warm and you donāt need the sweater, sometimes itās just crisp and you need that jacket. I was a girl scout. I like to be prepared, ok!? From there it turned into rain boots, because the weather is unpredictable. Then I needed a change of clothes for trudging through the snow to get to my building for work, so Iād have a few things in the car.

By the time spring came around I had a healthy collection of clothing that I could easily use as bedding if I chose to sleep in my car. I didnāt, but I could if I wanted to. The pile of clothes kept growing. You know how spring is. That first few weeks of warm weather youāre still not used to the warmth of the sun, how could you have forgotten, and then you inevitably have to shed a few layers that end up on the floor of the backseat.
Now itās just out of hand. The clothes have fully taken over my car. I didnāt even realize how spacious the Altima was until I had accumulated almost a year’s worth of clothing in here without a second thought. The thing that blows my mind is despite the insane quantity of clothing in here, THERE IS STILL ROOM! Like how?! It doesnāt make sense. Space aside, Ā I wonāt let me friends get too close lest they decide that my packrat tendencies are repulsive. I NEVER offer to drive when we go anywhere because I donāt have the kind of time it would require to clean out my car before they arrive.
I do, however, have that kind of time today. So here we are, cleaning out my car. Once my car has returned to its former glory I have placed a bin in the trunk of my car so that when I have a bunch of clothes at the end of the week I can put the clothes in there and bring them back into my apartment and hopefully avoid this terribly embarrassing situation from happening again.
So Your Teen Is Driving
Ok, so you have a teen driver. You are very likely having a panic attack. You trust your kid, you know they are good and smart kids. Alternately, you have watched your child walk directly into a mall fountain because they were on their phone. So youāre both excited that you donāt have to drive them all over town for basketball, and a little worried that they are going to get distracted and get into an accident. The best thing you can do is to really focus in on teaching your kid safe and defensive driving skills so that they are ready to take on the road when the time comes. Here are a few tips to get you, the nervous wreck parent, ready to train your new driver.

Before Each Driver Training Session
- Take time to plan out your route rather than winging it. Choosing quiet side streets, and avoiding busy thoroughfares would probably be a solid choice. Make sure you go over the route with your teen. It will help them be prepared too.
- Have an agenda of what road skills to work on before each drive begins.
- Adjust the passenger side mirror so that your teen has to adjust the mirrors themselves. Itās a good practice to get into.
- Stay calm and try not to raise your voice. If youāre calm, your teen will be too. No use in making them more nervous than they already are.
Driver Training On the Road
- Be sure to give your child plenty of advance notice when they will need to turn, or if you want them to perform a specific road skill.
- Keep talking to a minimum so as to not distract your child.
- If a mistake is made have your teen pull over and explain the error so that itās fresh in their memory.
- Speak and instruct in a calming tone. If you feel like your teen is starting to get frustrated end the lesson for the day.
- Be on the lookout for potential hazards or dangers as scanning their environment is a learned skill that your teen doesnāt yet have.
- When starting, keep the lessons short, maybe 15 or 20 minutes. As your teen gets more comfortable get up to around 40 minutes of driving per session.
- Remember that the information in drivers education is the be-all end-all and you shouldnāt contradict what was taught in these classes. Put your ego aside while keeping in mind that your teenās driversā ed teacher is a certified instructor, specially trained on how best to teach new drivers.
Home, After the Driver Training Session
- Go over the entire session, explaining mistakes, but still accenting the positive.
Ask your teen to assess how he or she drove and what was learned.
Congrats! Youāve made it though. Your teen is ready for the road test and you are probably ready for a nap. Parenting isnāt for the faint of heart, so donāt worry, youāre doing a great job!
Glamping: 2017 Nissan Titan XD Edition
Glamping: 2017 Nissan Titan XD Edition
For the past 10 years, my dad has been desperately trying to convince me to go on a camping trip with him. He has tried every manner of bribery and puppy dog faces in is dad repertoire. Hereās the thing, Iām not what most would call āoutdoorsyā. Iām outdoorsy in that I will enjoy a margarita on the porch, but thatās about it. Iām certainly not someone who would willingly go and sleep outside ON THE GROUND when beds exist. That seems bonkers to me. Even so, my dad is very persistent, and this year he pulled the ābut itās Fathersā Day. Donāt you love me?ā card. Low blow Dad. Naturally, I gave in and so I had to go camping with my Dad. I was not emotionally prepared for this journey.
My dad was absolutely elated. He went on and on for WEEKS about this trip, even as we were packing up his 2017 Nissan Titan XD he said we were going to have an amazing father-daughter bonding weekend. Why, could we not have had a bonding weekend indoors, at a resort perhaps?! No no, that wouldnāt be any fun according to dad. So here we are at Treehouse Camp at Maple Tree. We are in the depths of nature and already I am feeling the misery sinking in. But I love my dad so I will persist!
To my dadās credit, he brought everything but the kitchen sink. Like, everything. I was kinda impressed with all the things he fit in that truck. As we were setting up the tents and the campsite in general for our glorious bonding weekend the trip didnāt seem so bleak. Once camp was set up dad started cooking for our first night at the campsite. The food was good and the quiet was surprisingly soothing. We were actually having a decent time.
Well, we were having a good time until it started pouring rain and our campsite started to wash away. It seemed that dad had planned for this. He picked up one of the tents and set it up in the bed of the truck put down an air mattress and made his home there. He then proceeded to arrange the cab area of his truck into a nice little bed area for me. I could stretch out comfortably and definitely didnāt have to worry about the water, or even bugs really, getting into my sleep area. Dad and I were able to carry on our conversations despite the rain because the back window of the truck slid open and dad had arranged the tent so that the window was covered by the tent. It was a pretty sweet setup.
The next morning, we got up, well rested and went about our plans for the day. Come to find out, several of the surrounding sites flooded out. The neighbors’ tents had filled with water and they didnāt have cars quite as spacious as my dadās truck, so their night wasnāt nearly as restful. We even needed to use the truck to pull another familyās car out of the mud.
At the close of my father-daughter weekend, I realized that I actually had a good time, even with the monsoon. I still wouldnāt call myself an outdoorsy person, but I wouldnāt be opposed to going on another adventure with my dad, especially if we take the 2017 Nissan Titan XD. With his truck and my dadās planning ahead, weāre ready for anything!
Changing My Tires With Google and a Dream
Changing My Tires With Google and a Dream
My week has already started out strong. Iām behind in every conceivable area of life today and to make it better I somehow managed to miss my first alarm and Iām about to be late for work, again. As soon as I get out to my car I notice that my back passenger side tire is completely flat, and looks like it has been for a while. It would appear that in my busy work schedule stupor seem to have missed it. The tire is all but bald and there are now some sharp bits sticking out of the tire. Today, fate is not my friend. Fate might even be mocking me at this point. Iāve never had to change a tire before. I know that I have a spare, and maybe have the things to change the tire, but that doesnāt change that I have NO IDEA what Iām doing. There is no time to wait around for AAA to get here and help me out of this mess. So with my trusty cell phone and Google app, I am prepared to change my own tire. How hard could it be?

Somehow Iāve managed to get together the jack, wrench, spare tire, and what little dignity I have left, together to make this happen. Having removed the hubcap, less than gracefully, off of the wheel and in lieu of wheel wedges, have located some bricks next to my back porch that can be used to stabilize the car. Iām feeling moderately more prepared do actually do this. Following Google as though it is the messiah I have loosened the lug nuts, ONLY loosened, and not yet removed completely. Now comes the tricky part, setting up the jack.
Never in my life have I had to jack my car up so this part was some kind of sorcery. After locating a small cleared space of metal under the car specifically for the jack, and stabilizing the jack with a piece of wood also found by my deck IĀ feel ready to get this car off the ground. Once I completely removed the lug nuts the rest of the way, I start to see the light at the end of the tunnel and Iām FINALLY ready to remove the tire and get the spare in its place. With the new tire in place, I have reattached and tightened the lug nuts with as much strength as my poor little noodle arms could muster. Not gonna lie, itās not much, but once I got the tire back on the ground IĀ tightened them with the wrench anyway. Having lowered the car back to the ground and ACTUALLY tightened the lug nuts with the wrench, I have taken the jack out from under the car and put it back in my car, just in case, because my luck lately has not been great.
Iāve gotten the hubcap back on and even checked the tire pressure to make sure I can actually drive with this tire safely. All in all the whole process took me about 30 minutes, not too shabby. Granted, I am still 100% late for work, but at this point, Iām not super concerned. After work I will have to stop by Younger Nissan of Frederick to get myself a new tire, because this spare tire is NOT meant to be driven long distances, fortunately, they are on my way home from work so I can get there safely and all will be well.
Hopefully, if this ever happens to you, my experience helps you to know how to change your tire too. Itās not as hard as it sounds, but definitely, make sure you get over to a service center to get yourself a new tire. Younger Nissan of Frederick saved my skin with that new tire. I can safely say that I will be more aware of the state of my tires and be sure to service them more frequently.
Driving with a Confidence that Inspires
Driving with a Confidence that Inspires
Driving around in my 2017 Nissan Pathfinder Midnight EditionĀ from Younger Nissan of Frederick helps calm the voices in my head that say Iām not good enough or Iām unworthy. Mind you, every day is a battle, and my confidence in who I am as a person is, much like a roller coaster, not a linear or steady feeling. Just like every other woman out there I have doubts about who I am and if Iām making the right choices so feeling so in control of something is a reassuring feeling. Especially as a mother desperately trying to impart wisdom and confidence into my daughter, itās hard to say if she will absorb the confidence Iām trying to instill. She is her own very independent little person, and unfortunately, I have limited control, even at this age.

My daughter brings me an endless amount of joy. Watching her little personality develop into the intelligent and funny little woman that she is both amazing and terrifying. Sometimes I look at her and see my own face looking back at me. Itās startling, really, to see how many of my mannerisms she has picked up. Seeing those faces always makes me wonder what other characteristics of mine she has watched, learned, and made her own.
Logically I know that she is absorbing just about everything that I do at this age, itās just what two-year-olds do. They soak up everything around them like a sponge. So I know that she is taking in both the good and the bad. As such Iāve been worried that she will pick up on my insecurities and unsteady confidence. Sheās pretty independent and strong willed now, but sheās two so the trick will be to continue to continue to support her independence and confidence as she grows. With that in mind, I have been making a more concerted effort to be the woman that my daughter thinks I am and to be the strong and confident mother she deserves, but itās hard. Everyone needs a little confidence boost to get through.
Some people put on some makeup and high heels and feel ready to take on the world, but I feel truly on top of the world in my Nissan Midnight Edition. Honestly, itās hard not to. When Iām driving I feel in total control. It seems that my daughter picked up on that and decided to give her trike an āupgradeā. What was once a pink trike is now painted black ājust like mommyāsā. Sheās been driving around the neighborhood like she owns the place.
I may not always be a perfect mother or role model for my daughter, but Iām learning to Be One as I go and trying my best. If my daughter learns nothing else from me, I hope she holds onto that confidence and spark. Life has a way of making you question your confidence, but if her current little personality is anything to go by, I donāt think I have anything to worry about. Parenthood is hard, but as long as I can make my daughterās life even a little bit easier Iāll have done my job.
Playing Tetris With Your Truck: Making It All Fit
Playing Tetris With Your Truck: Making It All Fit
In what might be the most intense game of Tetris Iāve ever played, Iām helping one of my friends move her entire life from Doylestown, PA to Washington, D.C., taking only one trip and using only one Nissan Titan truck and a tarp. āIMPOSSIBLE!ā, you might say. Challenge accepted.

Now, my friend lives in a one bedroom apartment and the new apartment is completely furnished, so she, fortunately doesn’t have mountains of clothes to contend with. What it really comes down to is moving her TV, clothes/shoes, books, kitchen supplies, and tchotchkes. Itās a lot of stuff, in varying sizes, but I have faith that we can do this with a few easy steps.
- Organize items in groups of similar size and shape.
- Wrap up the breakable items, like the TV in a sheet or towel to protect from scratches.
- Place the larger non-breakable items first toward the cab of the truck.
- Then, starting at the cab end of the truck place items from largest to smallest in the truck bed.
- If possible put the TV or other fragile items between the bags of clothes to add extra cushion.
- Tuck all of your possessions in the truck using a tarp(or two), securing the tarp with bungee cords so that nothing flies out of your truck.
- Take longer bungee cords and add an extra layer of security across your items so that everything stays in place.
Having finished our game of high stakes Tetris and feeling that everything is secured and ready to roll, we 100% did a well deserved happy dance. There is something extremely satisfying about fitting everything into one trip. Fortunately, the 2017 Nissan Titan, was capable of handling the job. Now, after all that hard work, I think we deserve some ice cream from Sweet Pea on our way to D.C. It was quite a workout after-all.
