The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently evaluated the 2017 Nissan Maxima in their new car assessment program and the vehicle was presented with their highest-possible rating; a five-star overall safety rating. The vehicle earned five stars in the rollover, front, and side NHTSA crash tests in order to achieve this impressive overall rating.

The 2017 Nissan Maxima is equipped with a number of standard safety features such as traction control, brake assist, vehicle dynamic control, antilock brakes, and six airbags. The higher trim levels also offer a few additional safety systems such as rear cross-traffic alert system, Forward-collision alert system, Driver Attention Alert system, and blind-spot warning system.
