Are you looking to trade-in your old car for a shiny new one? Trading-in can sometimes be the hardest part of the car buying process, especially if you can’t a dealer to give you the full value of your vehicle. But understanding how to trade in a car and how to gather offers will help you maximize your trade-in value and get a better overall deal. When you trade in your car, your old vehicle’s value is deducted from your new car’s price. To get the highest amount possible, it is essential to know you can negotiate the trade-in value and the new price separately.

There are four main parts to the trade-in process and I will break them down for you so you can get the full understanding of the whole process.

Price your trade-in:

  • This part does require you doing some homework. The first step is to use online prices to help you estimate your car’s trade-in value.
  • Be sure to include all the car’s options, the correct mileage, a realistic condition level and your ZIP code for the most accurate value.

Solicit Quotes For Your Trade-In:

  • Be sure you have the following before you get trade-in quotes from dealerships
  • Vehicle title (often called a “pink slip”), Auto loan payoff and account information (if you have an auto loan), Current vehicle registration, Driver’s license, All vehicle keys
  • To get quotes, call  or email dealerships
  • Tell them you are looking to trade-in and want a fair price
  • Most dealers will only give firm trade-in quotes after a physical inspection of the car

Choose An Offer:

  • To get the best deal possible on your new car, you’ll want to make sure both the trade-in value and sale price you’re offered are in line with those listed online

Close The Deal:

  • The trade-in value is deducted from the new car price
  • You then pay the remaining amount for the new car with cash or with an auto loan
  • If you’re downsizing and your trade-in is worth more than the new car, the dealership will give you a check for the balance.

Still, Owe On Your Trade-In?:

  • If the trade-in value is worth more than the remaining balance on your auto loan, this difference is credited to the sale price
  • If you are upside-down on your car loan, meaning you owe more than the car is worth, you’ll pay the difference when you trade in

It is important to be proactive about safety, especially in your neighborhood. As a society, we are fast paced people but there are places we need to slow down and the biggest is your neighborhood. Neighborhoods are full of all different kinds of people who use the streets, sidewalks, and crosswalks. Some people assume neighborhoods are a safe place to drive through, but on the contrary, there are a lot of potential hazards you could run into. One moment of carelessness or recklessness in a neighborhood could result in a costly accident.

Common Hazards

There are many different types of obstructions or hazards that drivers must watch out for in a neighborhood setting. These include:

  • Children at play. Children often play in and around streets. They may suddenly run out in front of a car to chase a ball without looking.
  • Roadway obstructions. Neighborhood streets can become crowded with all kinds of obstructions, such as parked cars, trash, and recycling bins, and bags of leaves or discarded materials. Children, pets, and others may dart out between parked cars or from behind obstructions without warning.
  • Blind corners. Sometimes it can be hard to see around corners because of blocking trees, bushes, mailboxes, light poles, fences, or other obstructions.
  • Pedestrians crossing. Kids walking to or from school or people walking around the neighborhood with kids or pets may cross the street at the corner or in the middle of the street, sometimes without looking both ways.
  • Bicycles, scooters, and motorcycles. These two-wheeled vehicles have as much of a right to use the road as do automobiles.

Safety Tips

To avoid having an accident because of the above potential hazards, it is important for drivers to respect others’ use of the road in residential areas and to do the following:

  • Drive slowly. By driving at or under the reduced speed limit in neighborhoods you can prevent a severe accident.
  • Exercise caution at intersections and turns. Look in all directions for potential hazards.
  • Don’t tailgate slower vehicles. Be polite towards bicycles and scooters and keep a safe following distance until you can clearly pass them at a passing distance of greater than three feet.
  • Give pedestrians the right of way. Slow down or stop for them especially if there is a crosswalk.
  • Use your lights. At night, always use your headlamps to illuminate the road.

Following these simple rules will help keep your neighborhood streets safer and help stop a heartbreaking accident from occurring.

Does anyone else like to avoid responsibility at all cost, or is that just me? That is the realization I came to this weekend when I opened my trunk and was mortified to see that my trunk had gotten its own episode of hoarders, and it was all my fault. You know, life gets pretty hectic and sometimes we don’t have time or energy to bring that one bag in, and then one bag turns in two, and two turns into your whole closet and the next thing you know there’s no room in the car for passengers. So, then it’s just easier to throw everything in the trunk and bring it inside when you get home…where it lives for months… sound familiar? If it does, this one goes out to you little hoarders, we will get through it together.

As much as you don’t want to dedicate hours to cleaning out your car, you have to because this is our fault and we must face the consequence. But for real, you will thank yourself for doing because let’s face it, summertime is all about traveling, and vacation, and if you can fit the luggage in the car there’s gonna be a bigger problem. So, roll up your sleeves with me and let’s organize this trunk!

You might not even realize why it’s so important to have a clean trunk. Yes, it’s important to actually have available cargo space in your car but, there are even more beneficial reasons! For one, if your trunk is full that means you have to put loose articles inside the vehicle and this can become dangerous. If you have to break abruptly things could be sent flying through your car, injuring you, or rolling under the pedals hindering you from braking or accelerating. Having a clean car leads to having a happier drive/ride. Most people don’t like mess and clutter, so having a space like a trunk to put unwanted things is a good idea, but remember to bring it in at the end of the day!! Lastly, cleaning your car could actually save you money! The extra weight of all the junk in your car can have a negative impact on both fuel mileage and your wallet.

So now you’re in total agreeance with me, but you’re still wondering what are the best organization hacks, right? Well, the first thing is to remove everything… I know, I know, but bear with me. This is the easiest way to stay organized, start with a blank slate, and then go from there. Your next step is to decide what can stay, and what desperately needs to go. Keep things such as windshield washer fluid, oil, deicer, a first aid kit, etc. The next step is to get an organizer, it can be as simple as a device that keeps the shopping bags from falling over, to a multi-compartment organizer, whatever fits your lifestyle and helps you stay organized. Finally, a rule we should all live by, and that’s “keep it out of your trunk.” That means if it’s not a necessity it shouldn’t stay there! I know easier said than done, but I believe in you!

Okay, now that’s over you can sit back and relax, but remember my tips for next time and vow to never make your trunk your personal closet, or trash can ever again!

Just because it’s summer now doesn’t mean that you can take a vacation from caring for your windshield wipers. The sun’s UV rays can actually cause your wipers to deteriorate pretty quickly, so it’s important to keep an eye out for damaged blades. If you ignore them, you can experience permanent windshield damage that will cost a ton to fix. It’s always a good idea to make sure that your wipers are well-maintained all year round, so check out our list of ways to care for your wipers and then make sure you stay on top of this task! A good idea is to check your wipers and clean them off every time you get gas. Just sayin’.

You should take a look at your wipers at least every time you get gas. When you’re inspecting your wiper blades, look for the following:

  • Broken frame, which is detachment of frame arms at joints or connection points.
  • Metal corrosion, especially at joints and claws.
  • Visible cracks, tears, and missing pieces in the rubber squeegee’s edge.
  • Flex the rubber squeegee back and forth to see if it is still flexible. Aged squeegees will have difficulty conforming to the shape of your windshield and create streaks.
  • Check the squeegee wiping edge for rounded edges which can prevent the wiper blade from making strong contact with the windshield and reduces wipe quality.
  • Tug to ensure that the wiper blade has been securely installed on the wiper arm.
  • Check to make sure that the squeegee is secure in the wiper frame.

As we (should) know, the materials that your windshield wipers are made of are not ones that will last until the end of time. There are a lot of ways that the world around you can degrade your wipers:

  • Sun: Ultraviolet light and ozone deterioration
  • Oil: Car waxes and exhaust hold rubber-deteriorating oil
  • Airborne debris: Sand, mud, and dust carried in the wind
  • Moisture: Acid rain and salt water (in moist air both near the shore and inland)

Now to the signs that your wipers need a change. There are a few to look out for, and if you experience multiple items on this list at once then it’s definitely time to head over to the auto store to buy new wipers.

  • Streaking: occurs when the rubber squeegee dries, hardens and cracks. It can also be caused by tree sap, road tar and other foreign substances collected on either the glass or the blade.
  • Skipping: occurs when the blade develops a curvature from lack of use (e.g. left in the ‘parked position’ for an extended length of time).
  • Wearing: occurs with extensive use and is when the rubber edges are rounded instead of squared.
  • Splitting: caused when the sun’s ultraviolet rays penetrate the rubber squeegee, causing it to break down and separate from the frame.
  • Bent refill vertebra and bent frames: cause inconsistent contact with the glass surface, creating streaking or skipping.

If you’re wondering how to take care of your wipers throughout their life – i.e. before it’s time to replace them – here’s how you can do that!

  • Clean your windshield every time you fill your gas tank.
  • Gently wipe the rubber squeegee with a damp paper towel to remove any loose dirt or oil.
  • Never use your windshield wipers to de-ice your windshield. Instead, either use an ice scraper or use your defroster to melt snow and ice.
  • Pull your wiper blades away from the windshield during winter months to prevent ice build up on the rubber squeegee and to prevent them from sticking to the windshield.
