The Renault-Nissan Alliance has announced that they are planning to release 10 vehicles that will be equipped with autonomous drive technologies and a suite of new connectivity applications. These vehicles will be released between now and 2020 and will be available in the U.S., China, Europe, and Japan markets.
The two main pillars of the alliance have always been āzero-emissions, and zero-fatalitiesā. The zero-emissions goal is one that they have made impressive strides in, especially since the release of the Nissan LEAF in 2010. Over the past five years, sales of zero-emissions vehicles by the alliance has reached close to 300,000. Now, with new autonomous driving technologies, the brand is looking to decrease the fatality number by eliminating driver error.
“Renault-Nissan Alliance is deeply committed to the twin goals of ‘zero emissions and zero fatalities,'” Renault-Nissan Alliance chairman and CEO Carlos Ghosn said at the Renault-Nissan Silicon Valley Research Center. “That’s why we are developing autonomous driving and connectivity for mass-market, mainstream vehicles on three continents.”
The release of these new technologies will come one at a time, with each technology building upon the previous one. For 2016, they will debut āsingle-lane controlā, a feature used in stop-and-go traffic. In 2018, āmultiple-lane controlā will be released which will allow the vehicle to change lanes on the highway and avoid hazards. Then, in 2020, āintersection autonomyā will be released, making it possible for the vehicle to navigate through busy city streets and heavy traffic in urban areas.
