Nissan has been extensively testing the GT-R LM NISMO in preparation for the upcoming 24 Hours of Le Mans, the world’s oldest endurance racing event. The Le Mans course is one of the most famous and includes a mix of circuit racing and closed public roads that test out endurance and speed. When this NISMO was built, engineers specifically designed the vehicle for top performance at Le Mans, customizing the build of the vehicle to best accommodate the track circuit.

In addition to tailoring this model specifically for Le Mans, engineers have been extensively testing out this impressive new racecar by bringing it to several tracks that have a similar layout to the track at Le Mans. When the GT-R LM NISMO takes the track at this year’s event it will also be the first time in the 90 years that the race has been running that a front wheel drive vehicle has attempted it.

Check out the video above to get a behind-the-scenes look at the testing and modifications that Nissan engineers made to this impressive race car.

Production of the 2016 Nissan Maxima has officially begun at the Smyrna Vehicle Assembly Plant. The start of production on this all-new model was marked by a celebration that included many of the plant’s 8,400 employees and U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander. The Smyrna plant has been manufacturing Nissans since 1983 and over time has grown to become one of the top producing auto manufacturing plants in North America. In fact, throughout 2014, Smyrna produced a total of 648,000 vehicles which is more than any other North American plant produced that year.

“Today is a great day for the plant,” said John Martin, senior vice president, Manufacturing, Supply Chain Management and Purchasing, Nissan North America, Inc. “It’s a culmination of a lot of hard work by an awful lot of people in Japan, in Farmington Hills at our R&D center, with our suppliers and, above all, with the team here.”

As the first model in the new eighth-generation line of Maximus, the 2016 model has been given a redesigned look, is powered by a 300-hp engine and comes equipped with several advanced safety and convenience features. WardsAuto World has named the 2015 Nissan Murano to its annual list of the “Top 10 Best Interiors.” The Murano was in competition with over 40 other vehicles and was evaluated on criteria like materials, safety, comfort, ergonomics, and design.

“First time I saw the new Murano interior, I was blown away by the pearlescent film that’s used to lovely effect on the doors, instrument panel, center console and armrest,” said Tom Murphy, executive editor, WardsAuto World. “The rest of the interior is brilliantly executed as well, from the smooth, flowing lines of the instrument panel to the ample cargo hold. Beige interiors often are perceived as boring, but this one is stylish and contemporary while achieving a serenity uncommon among midsize CUVs.”

The Murano is now in its third-generation and has been nothing but successful for the Nissan brand. Some of the standout features that got the CUV the award were the 8” Color Display, NASA-inspired Zero Gravity seating, and the large windows and sunroof.

The ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Award has been awarded to Nissan for the fourth consecutive year. This honor was presented to the brand once again for its ongoing dedication to improving energy management and the reduction of greenhouse gasses. A few of these efforts include the use of an environmentally safe paint process that has reduced energy usage by 30%, more efficient LED lighting and performing repairs on compressed air leaks.

“Since Nissan became an ENERGY STAR partner in 2006, we have made continual improvements to our operations, which has helped us reduce both our environmental footprint and manufacturing costs,” said John Martin, senior vice president, Manufacturing, Supply Chain Management and Purchasing. “In 2014, those improvements reduced the amount of energy required to build vehicles by 13 percent—that’s the same amount of energy it would take to power more than 5,400 homes for an entire year.”

In addition to the overall recognition, the Nissan Vehicle Assembly Plant in Smyrna, Tennessee also received ENERGY STAR Certification for the ninth consecutive year. Both of these impressive recognitions reinforce the goal set by the Nissan Green Program to reduce the company’s carbon footprint by 20% by the year 2016.

While one of the main issues that cause accidents today is distracted driving, drowsy driving is also a common factor that can become hazardous. Drowsy driving occurs when the driver is fatigued which leads to a lack of concentration and motor skills, it can also lead to the driver falling asleep at the wheel. The lack of alertness in the driver even before actually falling asleep can still lead to some serious driving impairments that can cause an accident.  In order to combat this issue, Nissan has recently announced the development of their new Driver Attention Alert System which is available in the 2015 Murano and 2016 Maxima.

Through this system, special sensors are used to monitor the driver’s behavior and begin to detect signs of fatigue. These sensors monitor steering input patterns and first establish a baseline to then detect when driving behavior appears to become erratic or other factors that are consistent with a drowsy driver. In order to provide an accurate assessment, the system has been programmed to account for behaviors that could cause a false reading such as braking, lane changes, poor road conditions and road curving.

When the system detects that the driver may be starting to tire, it will automatically display an amber coffee cup symbol with the message “Take A Break?” in order to alert the driver to the detected drowsiness.  While ultimately driver drowsiness is the driver’s responsibility, this system can help to bring attention to the driver in order to make them aware that their tired state is affecting their driving ability.
