Nissan Showcases Future of Mobility At NYIAS
Last Friday marked the official start of the 2016 New York International Auto Show and Nissan was amongst the numerous automakers who were in attendance to showcase their latest concepts and future designs. For this year, Nissan chose to put the focus of their display on the Nissan Future Lab and their advancements in the world of “micromobility”.
Nissan established the Nissan Future Lab in 2014 and the group is dedicated to looking well into the future to develop a wider sense mobility by looking at a variety of products and different developments in automotive technology. Overall, the goal of this Lab is to keep Nissan ahead of the game by anticipating potential advancements or issues ahead of time so that the brand can adjust accordingly.
One such future advancement that the brand had on display at the NYIAS was the Nissan New Mobility Concepts (NNMC). This vehicle measures in at only 7.6 feet long making it around four-tenths the size of the new Nissan TITAN XD. This compact concept has been designed to help reduce traffic congestion in busy cities and lower pollution levels in those same areas.
“As large cities continue to grow into megacities globally, we need to better understand how transportation is changing and anticipate what transportation needs will look like in the future,” said Rachel Nguyen, director, Nissan Future Lab. “With the fast-paced growth of smart technologies and the emergence of the sharing economy, we are studying how this size and package of electric vehicle fits in real life customer situations.”

Concept Car Video Released By Nissan
Like many car brands, Nissan is looking ahead to the future and trying to give their customers an idea of what that future might hold. Many brands dream of a world with autonomous driving vehicles, all-electric models, and zero-emissions vehicles and where constant connectivity is part of everyday life. However, it can sometimes be difficult for customers to fully understand this view of the future which sounds more like the plot of a sci-fi fantasy movie than anything any of us could actually imagine in the world we live in.
In order to provide a visual of their vision for the future, Nissan created a new concept video featuring the Nissan LEAF that shows what the world would be like if electric cars were more than just vehicles, but became the main power source for our homes and offices. This video shows a scenario where vehicles autonomously park themselves after they finish charging at the charging station and then are plugged into your house in order to provide power to your home when you get up in the morning.

Nissan JUKE Serves As Canvas For Street Artists
During the recent White Night Celebration in Melbourne, Australia a glow-in-the-dark Nissan JUKE served as a canvas for a head-to-head contest between two graffiti artists. The White Night Celebration is an annual event that takes place over 12 hours from dusk till dawn. It is a celebration of art and culture that brings together local and international artists to put on exciting and engaging performances.
For the competition, the artists were Chris Le, and Snake Hole (Josh Meyer and Josh Brown). They were each provided with a Nissan JUKE that had been wrapped in a special glow-in-the-dark skin and created their designs using black paint and pens. Attendees could watch as their creations came to life and even participate by writing on the vehicles using a smartphone light.
Josh Meyer and Josh Brown created the piece “Snake Wrap” stating “Our initial impression when we saw the JUKE was it had snake-like characteristics. The grill, headlights and long smooth lines resonated immediately with us. We decided to create a series of snakes that traced the shapes and features of the JUKE. We utilized negative space, so that the snakes were glowing, and everything else would be blacked out.”
Chris Le’s piece was called “Journey to the West” and he drew inspiration from Chinese culture: “One of my favorite TV shows as a kid was the Monkey Magic series. Since it is the Year of the Monkey in the Chinese lunar calendar, I thought it would be fitting to depict Monkey and his friends on their journey to the West. Obviously an Asian themed illustration must include dragons since they are a big part of the culture, so it was only natural to draw epic dragons weaving past the character on the car.”
See both of these pieces of art unfold in the video above.
